You may have heard about the new scheme from Boots chemist (and also now Superdrug) for people experiencing domestic abuse.
In response to the concerns about the increase in the incidents of domestic abuse since Covid-19 lockdown and the worries about victims being unable to access help, organisations are starting to think about how they can help and respond.
Boots the chemists have launched their ‘Safe Spaces’ and encouraged pharmacy and counter staff to use opportunities to speak discreetly to potential victims of domestic abuse when they are in store : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52495434
Superdrug have also now joined this campaign and there have been similar schemes in place at restaurants, bars and hotels who have trained hospitality staff on how to intervene safely if they have concerns about domestic abuse being experienced by customers.
If you are worried about being able to access help you can:
- Think of a code word to use with a trusted friend/family member/older child – something that you will both remember and that can alert them to call 999
- Keep things calm if you can until you can find an opportunity to get help from a neighbour, a security guard or someone else.
- Download a safety App which can alert police quickly without the need to dial such as the ‘Hollie’ app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mm.hollieguard&hl=en_GB
- Familiarise yourself with the ‘Silent Solution’ method to call police so you know what to do if needed. If you dial 999 and can’t talk press 55 and they will guide you through so they can get help quickly to you.
Remember, Covid-19 is no excuse to abuse and lockdown does NOT mean you have to put up with it. If you are scared or worried about your relationship, trust your gut instinct – it’s not going to get better – don’t let it escalate. Get help before it’s too late.
