No matter who you are, what the reason is, who started it, divorce is pants.
Nobody ever went into a marriage hoping they were going to get divorced, so when it happens, whether it has been a long time coming or whether you have been blind-sided by the shock of a betrayal, it hurts.
Divorce is known as one of the most painful life experiences
It’s a bereavement – the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, you have to let go of what could have been and accept what is now. That’s a process – in the meantime there is pain, despair, guilt, shock, anger, sadness to deal with.
Then there are also other people’s emotions you have to deal with – family and friends who will all have an opinion about who was right/wrong, how you should proceed now, how you should be feeling, whether you should be ‘over it’ by now.
The impact on the children
Adele talks in her interview with Vogue magazine about ‘why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness’. https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/adele-british-vogue-interview
It’s tough to explain to your children why the family unit is suddenly going to change, and it doesn’t matter how old your children are, they too will feel sad, hurt, confused.
Celebrities who have struggled
Other celebrities have been open about their struggles with divorce too:
Kirsty Gallagher talked about how her divorce gave her symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/celebrity/kirsty-gallacher-reveals-painful-divorce-22190294
Louise redknapp said her divorce was ‘the first selfish thing she had done’ https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/louise-redknapps-brutal-explanation-ending-22215263
These are celebrities that to the outside world, seemed to have it all, but they are human like the rest of us and going through something like divorce, whilst being in the spotlight can’t be easy.
Look forwards
So, know that whatever the reason for your divorce, you are not alone.
Create a great support team around you, take it one step at a time, understand how to support yourself and your children as you navigate this strange and daunting path and you WILL be ok. It might be tough for a while, even the most amicable of divorces aren’t easy, but it WILL be ok in the end.
Give it a few months and you may even be looking back thinking that divorce was the best thing that happened to you!
