I recently supported a brave lady at Family Court in a 3 day hearing as she was applying for relocation following the criminal conviction of her ex for stalking – he was still in custody and was obviously objecting to her application. We ensured there was a comprehensive safety plan in place and Special Measures screens to ensure Kay didn’t have to see him at any point. We moved the courtroom around so that I could sit right next to Kay in the witness box and ensured she had a break when needed.

Kay’s barrister did a stirling job of pointing out that there had been no change in his behaviour or acceptance of responsibility, and in fact there were still significant concerns about the risk to Kay and the children that would escalate upon his imminent release.

This is what Kay had to say about the IDVA support and the difference it made to her:

IDVA support at Court

I had the privilege of being supported by Caron, my IDVA, through one of the most traumatic and significant moments of my life — my family court final hearing. Her presence, compassion, and expertise were truly extraordinary.

Throughout the hearing, Caron gave me strength and clarity when I needed it most. Her gentle touch and fierce whispers of courage while I was giving evidence were more powerful than words can describe. She instinctively knew when to offer calm and when to remind me of my own resilience.

Her deep knowledge of domestic abuse and her understanding of the complex needs of survivors have been invaluable. She not only provided emotional support but also practical guidance — making critical recommendations to MARAC and MAPPA conferences in my area, for mine and my children’s protection after my ex-husband’s release from prison.

During the hearing itself, she took control of the bundle, found the pages I needed, and took so much weight off my shoulders in the moment. With her steady support, I was able to stay grounded and focused — and ultimately, I won permission to relocate with my children to my home country, where we can finally rebuild our lives in safety.

Even after the court process ended, Caron has continued to check in and ensure I’m being supported in every area of my life. Her care has gone far beyond professional duty — she embodies what true advocacy means.

I don’t know where I would have been without her. I will always be deeply grateful for her strength, empathy, and dedication. I hope we will always stay in touch, and one day I can give back even a fraction of what she has given me.

Dear Caron, I cannot thank you enough!

Outcome

The Judge in this case totally understood the impact of the stalking on my client and how different her life would be should she remain in the UK. Now Kay and the children are free to live without fear, to move on with their lives and put the past behind them. I’m so happy for them all.
